Doug is a native of Raleigh and a graduate of Wake Forest University (B.A.) and Southeastern Seminary (M.Div., D.Min.). He has served churches in Baltimore, Md., Bertie County, N.C., and Elizabeth City, N.C. Doug has been Pastor of FBC since 1995. His wife Candace is an agent for Wilson County Cooperative Extension. Their daughter Whitney is an educator specializing in art education. Doug enjoys travel (Europe and the Middle East) and sailing his 12’ O’Day on the Buckhorn Reservoir. Doug and Candy are longtime members of the Association for Couples in Marriage Enrichment (ACME).

Three ministry areas that Doug is devoting his energies to are: 1) Involving laity in creative worship planning, 2) Involving laity in outreach and evangelism, and 3) Involving laity in volunteer missions trips.

STEVE CLAYTON, Associate Pastor
For over 25 years, Steve has been an active member of this congregation while working for Wilson County as Director of Solid Waste Management. Around 2004, Steve retired from that position but continued serving the County on a contract basis, which freed him to begin studies in the Divinity School of Campbell University. In the fall of 2006, FBC called Steve to part-time service as Associate Pastor. When he completes his degree, Steve will continue to serve FBC full-time. He is married to Alice Clayton. Their two adult sons are Will and Michael. Steve sees relationships as a key of his ministry at FBC: nurturing our relationship with God and with each other.

DANIEL HEATH, Minister of Youth
Daniel was born and raised in New Bern, NC. He attended Barton College and received a B.S. in Mass Communications with a focus in Audio Recording, and minors in Spanish and Religion/Philosophy. While attending Barton College he worked as a youth intern at First Baptist Church of Wilson. After graduation in May 2007 he moved to Nashville, TN and worked in the music industry, touring as sound engineer with gospel artist Gordon Mote. In May, 2009 he accepted a call back to Wilson to serve as the Minister of Youth.Daniel enjoys anything and everything that has to do with music. He also enjoys the beach, fishing, and watching sports. Daniel’s passion is to see youth come to know Christ on a more personal and intimate level.

GAY GULICK, Minister of Children
Gay Gulick is a native of Pennsylvania, but has spent most of her adult life in Florida. She has served churches in Florida and North Carolina. Her husband, Gil, is also a minister and serves as Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church in Stantonsburg. Gay feels that God called her to work with children because of her love for children and child advocacy. She loves building a relationship with children and then sharing Jesus with them. Gay believes in building a strong Biblical foundation for children, so they always have it to help them through all of life’s journeys. She holds a preschool and children’s ministry certification from the Baptist Theological Seminary in Richmond. In her spare time, Gay likes to crochet, bake and hang out with Gil and their two pups, Deacon and Tupper.

KELLEY GARRIS, Minister of Music
Kelley grew up in Southern Pines, NC. She is a graduate of Meredith College (B.M. in organ, B.A. in religion) and the University of Kansas (M.M. in organ). From 1983-2009 she served as Minister of Music at First Baptist, Smithfield, NC. She lives in Smithfield with husband, Greg, who is Director of Pharmacy at Johnston Health. She and Greg have three sons: Evan is a senior at NCSU, Madison a 2013 graduate of Davidson College, Cameron a student at Smithfield Selma High School. Kelley’s main ministry interest is encouraging persons to use their God given talents in the creative worship arts: music, drama, the visual arts. In her spare time Kelley enjoys homemaking, finding bargains, traveling, walking, riding her bike, reading, and keeping up with the interests of her sons.

JUAN BARBOSA, Minister of the Hispanic Mission
Juan is married to Evangelina Barbosa and they have three kids Eva, Stephany, and Juan Jr. By the grace of God, he has been a part of his flock since May of 1991. Juan has been a member of First Baptist Church Hispanic Mission since the summer of 1996. He served as a Sunday School Teacher, a Deacon and is currently serving as Lay Pastor for the Mission. Juan is also continuing his education at the Golden Gate Baptist Seminary in Greenville NC.
